The Rise of Cyber Attack Cases and Bank Sinarmas Sharia Business Unit Collaboration with SSN Polytechnic Encourages the Young Generation to Be Aware of Information Security

Jakarta, May 20, 2023 After successfully holding Wreck-IT 3.0 in 2022, SSN Polytechnic collaborated with Bank Sinarmas Sharia Business Unit to present Wreck-IT 4.0 with the theme "Encouraging Innovation: Developing the Younger Generation through Education and Technology," which was held jointly offline. This is the second time Wreck-IT has been held offline; it was previously held in 2019.

Massive technological developments need to be accompanied by knowledge about securing these technologies, one of which is cybersecurity. The National Cyber and Crypto Polytechnic, as an official university under the auspices of the National Cyber and Crypto Agency, also realizes the importance of increasing information security risk awareness in Indonesia and developing competent cyber security talent.

The National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) revealed that incidents of cyber attacks in Indonesia in 2022 had decreased compared to 2021. This year, the number of attacks reached nearly one billion, while in the previous year there were 1.6 billion. BSSN spokesman Ariandi Putra said the data breach case in 2022 was one of the most high-profile cyber attacks, including the one discovered by hacker Bjorka.

Taking this into account, the State Cyber and Crypto Polytechnic, in collaboration with Bank Sinarmas Sharia Business Unit, as one of the national banks that has high concern for cybersecurity issues, is again holding WRECK INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, or Wreck-IT. Wreck-IT, now in its fourth year, raises the issue of the importance of innovation and the role of the younger generation in improving cybersecurity.

Wreck-IT 4.0 consists of two series of events, namely the national-scale Capture The Flag (CTF) competition as an event to train and hone the skills of the younger generation in cybersecurity. The second event is a seminar that is held in a hybrid manner by inviting experts to share information regarding developments in the world of cyber security in the Cloud Computing sector and the industrial sector 4.0. Both the competition and the seminar are held free of charge, without any fees being collected from the participants.

The CTF concept that will be used in the preliminary round of Wreck-IT 4.0 is jeopardy style; each team competes to get the highest points by solving problems from every available question. Each question tests participants' abilities in different fields, such as web exploitation, cryptography, reverse engineering, pwn, forensics, and misc. The varied forms of questions can create a more dynamic and less monotonous working atmosphere, adjusting the ability and composition of each team.

In the final round, the attack/defense concept was used, in which each team tried to get a flag from an information system that had been prepared using defensive and attacking techniques. It is the hope of the National Cyber and Sandi Polytechnic and the Bank Sinarmas Sharia Business Unit that this activity can have a sustainable impact on developing excellent cyber security talents in Indonesia.
